“When you do what you love it doesn’t feel like work,” my mom said to me as I rolled my eyes with frustration. I couldn’t fathom loving my job so much that it didn’t leave me feeling totally depleted with little time for actually living my life.
I was new to Corporate America, but right away I knew it was not where I belonged. I didn’t want to only get 2-3 weeks PTO (including sick days!) causing me to miss out on important moments with my loved ones because someone else put in their PTO request before I did. I didn’t want to be told I had to come to work after spending the entire night up with the stomach flu (true story). I didn’t want my whole life to feel like it revolved around work.
But what did I want? Truthfully, I had no clue. I was in my early 20s with little sense of self and little direction. I wanted to experience the love for what I did for a living that my mom talked about, but I honestly thought she was making it up and that it didn’t really exist. The only thing I had going for me in those early days was this quiet little voice in the back of my mind that started to grow louder and louder saying, “There has got to be more to life than this.”
Rather unknowingly, I decided to start listening to that voice. Here’s what I did to uncover my passion and life purpose:
- I said yes to things that felt fun. Dance class, a trip to NYC, volunteer opportunities. If it seemed fun, I rolled with it, without overthinking it! I noticed how I tended to talk myself out of things and rarely talked myself into things, so I just went with my gut instinct instead of my overthinking brain!
- I started taking yoga and really leaned into the positive messaging and spirituality it offered and read two personal growth books that Oprah had on her show. I liked how these things felt, so I followed that good feeling.
- I started therapy, mostly out of desperation after my apartment was burglarized and I was waking up in the night screaming in fear. I moved through said fear and started to cultivate a sense of self.
The more I got to know my authentic self, and the more I started showing up as her, the easier my life became! My world was expanding and my mindset was shifting when suddenly, a volunteer opportunity with my sorority Delta Gamma at TCU fell into my lap. By this time, I was used to saying yes to things that sounded fun, so instead of telling myself I didn’t have the time for it, I just said yes.
This changed everything for me. I absolutely loved volunteering, and surprise surprise, my favorite part was mentoring the collegians! Here’s what happened next:
- I graduated therapy, and my therapist suggested working with a Life Coach and asked me if I had ever considered becoming one. Ironically I had considered being a therapist when I was in college but changed my mind because it didn’t feel right. The minute she asked me the question, I felt a click in my soul of this is it, this is what you’re meant to be doing. You’re meant to be a Certified Life Coach! You were so close with therapy but that wasn’t it, this is it!
- I randomly met not one but two Life Coaches while I was out and about saying yes to things! They shared their experiences with me which further validated this inner knowing I had that this was it, this was my life calling, this is my passion and life purpose!
- I started looking into ICF accredited coaching schools and found one that felt so right, with classes that were starting in the next few weeks, so I just went right ahead and said yes!
Fast forward from 2018 when my coaching journey began to 2025 and here I am, with a “job” that doesn’t feel like work at all, absolutely loving what I do, with none of the constraints of the corporate world! One of my favorite things to coach on is uncovering your passion and life purpose because I have been where you are and can help you get where you want to go! I know what a game changer it is to be clear on the things that light you up inside and to get it live it out every day, for a living!
